Eagle Scout Projects

It has been our good fortune to have several eagle scout projects completed or underway along the rail-trail.   Since we are frequently asked for ideas for more projects, we decided to start a list of ideas and post them here.   This is in no way a complete list of what could be done along the trail, only our first attempt at throwing around a few ideas.  If anyone has a suggestion for a project please let us know.  These projects may or may not be suitable for an Eagle Scout project.  We will let that up to the scout to decide.

  • Build a fitness trail along the trail between Fogelsonger Road and Britton Road.  An article in the May 2000 issue of Outside magazine gives a goods description with pictures of some of the stations.
  • Repair, paint and upgrade the small storage shed in Oakville.
  • Install interpretive signs along the trail describing the geology of the area with a corresponding pamphlet that could be placed at the trailheads.   This could include a close up look at the rock formations in the various cuts along the trail or a larger look at the valley.  Example, from the bench between mile marker 3 and Duncan Road you can see Clarks Knob, Roxbury Gap, Three Square Hollow and Doubling Gap.
  • Install interpretive signs along the trail describing the history of the valley and the railroad with a corresponding pamphlet that could be placed at the trail heads.   This could be combined with the previous example and not only point out the gaps in the mountain, but also their historical significance to the valley, PA, westward expansion of the country, etc.
  • Construct a small storage shed at the trailhead in the Shippensburg Township Park.
