Trail Closed Why is the the trail sometimes closed at the Newville trailhead? The entire trail is not closed.  Only the half-mile paved section of the trail at the Newville trailhead is closed.   The rest of the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail remains open from dawn-to-dusk all year long even when you see the closed sign.  You may access the open sections of the trail via the grassy strip of land on the north side (the Newville side) of the pavement.   CLICK HERE for more information.

Cumberland Valley Rails-to-Trails Council  Please help us find out who is using the trail by completing a survey.  CLICK HERE to complete the survey online.  Smart phone users can access a friendlier formatted survey HERE.
Paper surveys will be available at the Shippensburg and Newville trailheads.

Cumberland Valley Rails-to-Trails Council Are you interested in seeing the trail extended to Carlisle?   We are currently working with Cumberland County trying to make it happen but we need some Carlisle based volunteers to take up the challenge.  Click here for more information on a possible extension.

Events

CVRTC puts on a series of fundraising events through out the year. The events include the Race, Run, Ride & Ramble on April 23, The Solstice 10K in June, and the Fall Down on the Trail in the fall.  All proceeds from the events will benefit the CVRTC and will be used for maintaining the current trail along with extending the trail into Shippensburg and Carlisle Without these fundraising events CVRTC would not be able to provide the community with this wonderful asset.   Come out and support the trail by participating in one of our events.

National Recreation Trails The Cumberland Valley Rail-Trial was designated a National Recreation Trail. National Recreation Trails are components of the National Trails System and recognize existing trails that connect people to important natural, recreational and cultural places and improve their quality of life.  Click here for more information.  Click here to go to the National Recreation Trails web site.

Carlisle Area Health & Wellness Foundation CVRTC recently received a grant from the Carlisle Area Health & Wellness Foundation to educated people on the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet and to provide helmets to individuals that need one.  The helmets were distributed at Get Movin' Night at the Nancy Grayson Elementary School/a>, the  Race, Run, Ride & Ramble held by CVRTC and to the Shippensburg Area Head Start.   All the helmets have now been distributed.  We thank the Carlisle Area Health & Wellness Foundation for making this program possible.

Work Days

Now that the Cumberland Valley Rail -Trail is mostly complete,  we must turn our attention the the care and maintenance of the trail. CVRTC depends on local membership dues and contributions to pay for the maintenance of the trail. We receive no funding from the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), or from any government entity.  CVRTC also depends on volunteers to provide all the labor. Consider adopting a section of the trail, arranging a work day with your group or coming as an individual to one of our a work days.  If you would like to be notified of future work days or if you or your group would like to schedule you own work day please contact us at info@cvrtc.org

Millennium Trails Check out some photos of the trail, ribbon cutting ceremony and Annual Events in our  Photo Galleries.

Flora and Fauna

Vern Gauthier sent us a list of birds seen on the trial between Newville and Oakville over the last 3 years.  A total of 32 of the birds were new to our list.  Several new birds were spotted by  Dave C.  We now have a total of 97 different birds seen along the trail.
Help us catalog the Flora and Fauna found along the trail by submitting what you see.

Flora and Fauna

It has been our good fortune to have several eagle scout projects completed or underway along the rail-trail.   Since we are frequently asked for ideas for more projects, we decided to start a list of ideas and post them here.
