The Cumberland Valley Rail Trial Council, Inc. (CVRTC) requires a Special Use Permit for any races, other speed competitions, fundraisers, special events, or for groups exceeding 50 persons on the Rail Trail and for any use of the boxcar or Ship Station. It is also required for any use of the trail or facilities that breaks one of the trail rules. We also require CVRTC to be named on a certificate of liability insurance provided by you.

Fees

No Fee:

  • Franklin or Cumberland County 501c(3)
  • Franklin or Cumberland County university group
  • Franklin or Cumberland County school group
  • Franklin or Cumberland County service club
  • Franklin or Cumberland County resident raising money for a non-profit
  • Any event that is free to participate
  • Any event sponsored by CVRTC

Any group that uses the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail to raise funds is encouraged, but not required, to make a donation of an amount of their discretion to help the all volunteer CVRTC maintain the trail that made your event possible.

$300 plus 10% of the gross receipts over $3000:

  • All for profit groups
  • Any other group or individual from outside Franklin or Cumberland County

 

Additional Requirements

  1. All requests must be submitted online at the link below by the Permittee. Permittee must be at least 18 years of age. ALL INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED

  2. Applications must be submitted at least two (2) full weeks in advance of the requested date and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
  3. Cumberland Valley Rails-to-trails Council, Inc. reserves the right to decline any application it feels is an inappropriate use of the trail or facilities.
  4. The approved permit will be sent to the requesting email.
  5. The Permittee must provide CVRTC with a Certificate Of Liability Insurance.
  6. The Permittee is bound by all trail rules and ordinances as though the same were inserted herein. Click here for the trail rules.
  7. The trail must be keep open to users not in this event.
  8. Separate permission must be received from Shippensburg Township (717.532.7137) to use the facilities at the Shippensburg Township Park or the restrooms at Shippensburg Station. Permission must be received from Newville Borough (717.776.7633) for the use of the facilities at the Newville Trailhead.
  9. It is understood that minors will be provided with sufficient adult supervision.
  10. I grant CVRTC permission to use any photographs, motion pictures, recordings, or any other record of this event for legitimate purposes.
  11. All fees are nonrefundable.
  12. Limitation of Liability

    The Permittee hereby agrees to hold the Cumberland Valley Rails-to-trails Council, Inc (CVRTC), all other sponsors, their representatives and successors harmless for any and all claims for damages or injuries to persons or property resulting from the Permittee’s use of the trail, assume all risks associated with this event including, but not limited to: falls, contact with other participants, the effects of the weather, including high heat and/or humidity, traffic and the condition of the trail and will be responsible for the group’s behavior and/or actions.  CVRTC shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages of any kind arising out the event or the use or the inability to use the Site
